Research Focus & Anticipated Benefits

The Center for Nano-Chemical-Electrical-Mechanical Manufacturing Systems (Nano-CEMMS) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign is a Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center (NSEC) sponsored by the National Science Foundation and managed in partnership with Stanford University, North Carolina A&T State University, the University of California, Irvine, the University of Notre Dame, and Northwestern University. NSECs address complex, interdisciplinary challenges in nanoscale science and engineering, and integrate research with education internally and through a variety of partnership activities.

Research in Nano-CEMMS addresses a central problem in the development of nanotechnology: how to assemble structures at sizes smaller than can be seen (or transduced) and manipulated (or transcribed). Making three-dimensional, nanoscale devices and systems from millions to trillions of different types of molecules is incredibly difficult. The Center’s goal is to develop a reliable, robust and cost-effective nanomanufacturing system to make nanostructures from multiple materials. This technology will allow advancements and discoveries in nanoscience to move from the laboratory to production.

Education & Outreach

Nano-CEMMS provides a wide range of programs specifically targeted at increasing the diversity of students involved, to increase K-12 and undergraduate educational opportunities, and to provide graduate students with teaching experience in an emerging field. NanoChallenge and Principal’s Scholars are two Nano-CEMMS programs aimed at high school students. NanoChallenge is an after-school program for high school students in the East Central Illinois area. The Center also participates in the Principal’s Scholars program by presenting nanotechnology modules within the program's engineering strand. The Eastern Central Illinois Nanotechnology Teacher Enhancement Program (ECINTEP) offers a dynamic and engaging professional development opportunity in the form of a two-week summer institute. Participants learn how scientists and engineers work to manipulate matter at the molecular level.
