Research Focus & Anticipated Benefits

The Columbia Center for Electronic Transport in Molecular Nanostructures at Columbia University is a Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center (NSEC) sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). NSECs address complex, interdisciplinary challenges in nanoscale science and engineering, and integrate research with education internally and through a variety of partnership activities.

The Columbia Nanocenter's goal is to establish new paradigms for information processing using the characteristics of electron transport unique to nanoscale molecular structures. The Nanocenter draws upon years of experience in chemical synthesis to design molecular structures with carefully crafted properties. This work has the potential to impact major disciplines in addition to electronics including photonics, biology, neuroscience and medicine.

Education & Outreach

Attracting talented and capable research students for nanotechnology research opportunities is one of the Nanocenter's primary educational goals. Its educational efforts begin at the primary school level. Attempting to increase K-12 student awareness of nanoscience, the Nanocenter's Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program, administered by the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, provides selected high school teachers with research experience that translates to the classroom.

The Nanocenter has also established an aggressive recruitment program for individuals from historically underrepresented groups at the undergraduate level. The Research Program for Undergraduates (RPU) program brings seven outstanding collegians from throughout the United States to the Columbia University campus to gain valuable laboratory research experience by pairing each participant with a faculty mentor, and providing them with a unique project tailored to his or her abilities and interests.
