Research Focus & Anticipated Benefits

The Center for Intelligent Maintenance Systems, an NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) aims to equip industry products and systems with near-zero-breakdown performance and to transform traditional maintenance practices from "fail and fix" to "predict and prevent" methods. The center conducts research on frontier technologies in embedded and remote monitoring, prognostics, and intelligent decision systems, and has produced the trademarked Watchdog Agent® prognostics tools and Device-to-Business (D2B) infotronics platform for e-maintenance systems.

NSF's I/UCRC program features high-quality, industrially relevant research, industrial support, and collaboration in research and education, as well as the direct transfer of research results to U.S. industry. With industrial and other support totaling 10-15 times the NSF investment, I/UCRCs are a premier example of how to leverage federal funding to synergize the research and development process.

Education & Outreach

An I/UCRC not only contributes to the nation's research infrastructure base; it also strengthens the engineering and science workforce through the integration of research and education. The program leverages NSF funding with industry resources to support graduate students performing industrially relevant research.

The Center for Intelligent Maintenance Systems also reaches out to local schools, conducting Research Experiences for Teachers in Cincinnati. The program provides middle-school teachers with hands-on study and assistance in introducing the concepts they learn into the classroom.  The program encourages the participation of female and minority students, inviting sixth-grade girls to participate in a Robotics Day Camp, Women in Science Day, and other hands-on activities alongside the teachers. High-school students also visit the center for hands-on research.
