Research Focus & Anticipated Benefits

The Center for Safety, Security, and Rescue Research, an NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC), provides integrative robotics and artificial intelligence solutions in robotics for activities conducted by the police, FBI, FEMA, firefighting, transportation safety, and emergency response to mass casuality-related activities. This multi-university center is built upon the knowledge and expertise of multi-disciplinary researchers in computer science, engineering, industrial organization, psychology, and public health.

The need for safety, security, and rescue technologies has accelerated in the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy, and a new research community has formed to address emerging needs in homeland security and emergency preparedness and response.  The center's projects address a number of areas: airport and port security, biomimetic identification, searc, rescue and extrication, and much more. One of the center's projects, for example, is a joint project with the Department of Homeland Security for monitoring mass transit sites. The Scout robot, developed by the center's researchers, has been deployed by the U.S. Army in Iraq and Afghanistan to detect improvised explosive devices.

Education & Outreach

An I/UCRC not only contributes to the nation's research infrastructure base; it also enhances the intellectual capacity of the engineering and science workforce through the integration of research and education. The program leverages NSF funding with industry resources to support students performing industrially relevant and interdisciplinary research.

The Center for Safety, Security, and Rescue Research integrates research and education, addressing the need for a skilled workforce in these fields through hands-on training, distance learning, simulations, and interactive learning experiences. The center also organizes an annual Robotics/Tech Camp for middle-schoolers from underrepresented groups, using robots and algorithms developed by the center to build interest in science and engineering.
