Research Focus & Anticipated Benefits

 

The Center for Membrane Applied Science & Technology, an NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC), was founded in 1990 to conduct research, transfer technology and promote education in membrane technology, including membrane formation, characterization and performance. Originally known as the Center for Separations Using Thin Films, the center supports work in membrane fouling and in applications such as water treatment and reclamation, sensor development and integration, energy and chemicals, pharmaceuticals and biomedical.

 

I/UCRCs feature high-quality, industrially relevant fundamental research, strong industrial support and collaboration in research and education, and direct transfer of research results technology to U.S. industry, improving its competitive posture in world markets. With industrial and other support totaling 10 to 15 times the NSF investment, I/UCRCs are a premier example for how to cost-effectively synergize research and development.

 

Education & Outreach

 

An I/UCRC not only contributes to the nation's research infrastructure base; it also enhances the intellectual capacity of the engineering and science workforce through the integration of research and education. The program leverages NSF funding with industry resources to support graduate students performing industrially relevant and interdisciplinary research.  This I/UCRC provides both faculty and students with research expertise in membrane science and engineering.
