Continuation of An Industry-University Cooperative Research Center (I-UCRC) Site at ASU  (Arizona State University)

Research Focus & Anticipated Benefits

The Arizona Water Quality Center, an NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC), conducts interdisciplinary research on water quality problems. The center includes experts in biology, chemistry, physics, hydrology, and engineering working together with companies and government agencies to enhance water quality for the community at large.

Research projects include potable water quality and management, water security, water reuse, fate and remediation of commercial and industrial contamination, and agricultural and mining impacts on water quality.

I/UCRCs feature high-quality, industrially relevant research, strong industrial support and collaboration in research and education, and direct transfer of research results and technology to U.S. industry to improve its competitive posture in world markets. With industrial and other support totaling 10 to 15 times the NSF investment, I/UCRCs are a premier example for how to cost-effectively synergize research and development.

Education & Outreach

The Arizona Water Quality Center contributes substantially to the training and development of both graduate and undergraduate students. Students, while conducting research and development activities at the center, interact with companies from the private sector and from governmental and non-governmental organizations. This integration of the university with industry and government provides students with the opportunity to apply their skills to real-world problems. In addition, it prepares them for future job opportunities and provides opportunities for internships with industrial partners.
