Research Focus & Anticipated Benefits

The mission of the Center for Fuel Cells, an NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) funded since 2003, is to help industry advance the technology and commercialization of fuel cells.  The center performs research in fuel cell design and performance; hydrogen storage materials, devices, and distribution systems; new catalysts and materials for hydrogen production and fuel cell electrodes; and motor design and power conditioning.

NSF's I/UCRC program is effecting positive change in the performance of the U.S. industrial enterprise. I/UCRCs feature high-quality, industrially relevant fundamental research, strong industrial support and collaboration in research and education, and direct transfer of research results technology to U.S. industry to improve its competitive posture in world markets. With industrial and other support totaling 10 to 15 times the NSF investment, I/UCRCs are a premier example for how to cost-effectively synergize research and development.

Education & Outreach

In addition to advancing fuel cell technology, the Center for Fuel Cells is training the next generation of engineering leaders. The University of South Carolina hosts strong graduate and undergraduate programs with a history of significant funding in the areas of electrochemical engineering and catalysis. South Carolina's Department of Chemical Engineering is also the site for a NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. The REU program brings top chemical engineering students from across the country to earn a stipend conduct cutting edge engineering research with University of South Carolina faculty members. The University of South Carolina is also the pilot site for the NSF REU Japan program in which students from South Carolina and other universities travel to Sophia University in Tokyo and Osaka University in Osaka, Japan for a semester of research under the direction of Japanese research professors.
