Research Focus & Anticipated Benefits

The University of Maryland Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). MRSECs support interdisciplinary materials research and education of the highest quality while addressing fundamental problems in science and engineering that are important to society.

The Maryland MRSEC carries out nationally recognized fundamental research on surfaces and interfaces of materials with potential impact on the next generation of opto- and nano-electronic devices, and on complex oxides with potential applications in memory, switches, and sensors. Two specific research thrusts are supported by interdisciplinary research groups in the center, as well as additional “Seed programs” in which young faculty develop new and exciting research directions. The Center's two main research efforts explore low-dimensional interfaces and multifunctional magnetic oxides. Seed projects include assembly and immobilization of functional nanomaterials for device applications, synthesis and exploration of topological insulators, and modeling elastic effects on crystal surfaces.

Education & Outreach

The UMD-MRSEC’s commitment to excellence in science and engineering is driven by its mission to create bridges between professionally-trained scientists and professionally-trained educators to improve inquiry-based science teaching; raise the quality of K-12 science and engineering education programs; enlarge the pool of students who become scientists; advance participation of groups traditionally underrepresented in science; and increase public interest in, and awareness of scientific concepts and new technologies.

The UMD-MRSEC maintains an impressive list of outreach programs including summer camps, a student science conference, a homeschool program, and family science programs. The college students, the Center offers a Research Experience for Undergraduates program that enables participants to do summer research alongside MRSEC experts while earning a stipend.
