Research Focus & Anticipated Benefits

The Compact, High-Performance Cooling Technologies Research Center (CTRC), an NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC), addresses industry needs in the area of high-performance heat removal from compact spaces.  The use of sophisticated cooling techniques can improve the efficiency and performance of many systems, including electronics, transformers, cellular communications stations, electric vehicle batteries, and military electronics and avionics.

NSF's I/UCRC program is effecting positive change in the performance capacity of the U.S. industrial enterprise.  The centers feature high-quality, industrially relevant fundamental research, strong industrial support and collaboration in research and education, and direct transfer of research results to U.S. industry, improving its competitive posture in world markets. With industrial and other support totaling 10-15 times the NSF investment, I/UCRCs are a premier example of how to leverage federal funding to synergize the research and development process.

Education & Outreach

An I/UCRC not only contributes to the nation's research infrastructure base; it also enhances the intellectual capacity of the engineering and science workforce through the integration of research and education. The program leverages NSF funding with industry resources to support graduate students performing industrially relevant and interdisciplinary research.  At the Cooling Technologies Research Center, graduate and undergraduate students participating in center research projects provide a trained and readily available workforce for the center's industry members.
