Collaborative Research: I/UCRC - Water and Environmental Technology (WET) Center  (Temple University)

Research Focus & Anticipated Benefits

The Water and Environmental Technology Center, an NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC), focuses its research on water quality and emerging contaminants. The center studies and develops technologies and methods to minimize the adverse effects of contaminants on water quality, human health, and the environment.

Emerging contaminants include chemicals, biological agents and materials recently detected in the environment that may pose a potential or real threat to human health or the environment, but which are not yet regulated or are expected to undergo changes in regulations.

The engineers and scientists at the center work collaboratively to generate information about levels, fate, transport, and ecological and health impacts of contaminants.  They are also developing detection and monitoring capabilities, pollution prevention capabilities, cost-effective treatment technologies, and methods for optimizing existing operations at wastewater and drinking-water treatment plants.

Education & Outreach

The Water and Environmental Technology Center contributes substantially to the training and development of graduate and undergraduate students. Students participate in research and development activities and interact with companies from the private sector, as well as governmental and non-governmental organizations.  Many member companies have overseas installations and/or third party manufacturers. Hence, the environmental foot-print is very large.  Also, the students will be exposed to regulatory, technological, social and cultural aspects of different countries, enhancing their global experience. The center's educational programs and internships with industry partners produce a well-trained skilled workforce for industry.
