Natural history museum takes learning outdoors

iUTAH has partnered with the Natural History Museum of Utah (NHMU) to incorporate iUTAH research into the museum's Taking Learning Outdoors (TLO) program for K through 12 students. The first partnership program, held at the Bear River Watershed in northern Utah, included a series of water workshops, water tests and scientific discussions focusing on the topic of water sustainability. Participating teachers could implement the outdoor learning activities into their curriculum because they offer students an opportunity to observe, question and make their own inferences about their surroundings.

Learning about best practices for water use helps students make better choices about water consumption and can help maximize the efficiency of this finite resource. The TLO program focuses on subject areas that can be integrated through learning outdoors, giving students the opportunity to acquire research, math and analytical skills as they explore scientific procedures. In addition, teachers receive guidance as they develop curriculum related to their TLO experience.

Additional iUTAH outdoor learning sessions will promote these same educational learning values and expand to include additional K through 12 institutions throughout the state. iUTAH is sponsored by the Utah Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR).
