Abstract at Time of Award

The explosive growth in the number and resolution of sensors and scientific instruments, of enterprise and scientific databases, and of internet traffic and activity has engendered unprecedented volumes of data. The frameworks, metadata structures, algorithms, data sets, search and data mining solutions needed to manage the volumes of data in use today are largely ad-hoc. The goal of this proposal is to initiate a new Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) for Advanced Knowledge Enablement. The proposed center will study the representation, management, storage, analysis, search and social aspects of large and complex data. The proposed center, hosted at Florida International University (FIU), will facilitate research on problems of relevance to industry and in a forum that protects the proprietary nature of the asset. The research program will involve state-of-the art techniques for enhancing semantics, internet technology and knowledge representation techniques for improvements in applications. The activities proposed by FIU will have a wide ranging impact on the industry for improved application of data management and access. The investigators at the proposed center will leverage their track record of involving FIU?s predominantly Hispanic student population in research with programs such as ?affinity groups? that enable research performed by the graduate and undergraduate students to be shared with other students. The Center also plans to expand opportunities of mentoring and graduating computer scientists from under-represented populations at the BS, MS, and PhD levels. The center plans to build a cohesive structure spanning multiple institutions, in part by enabling extended research visits at partner sites for faculty and doctoral students.

Florida International University (FIU) is the founding site of the Industry-University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) for Advanced Knowledge Enablement (CAKE http:://, which addresses technology industry-relevant research problems in data modeling, data collection, data mining, petascale archives, network topology studies, and novel search techniques. The research conducted by I/UCRC-CAKE addresses challenges that cross scientific domains and vertical markets, as many industries are facing existential problems due to the sheer influx of data generated.

The FIU High Performance Database Research Lab (, the FIU TerraFly Geospatial Data Services (, the FIU Healthcare Information Technology Initiative (, the U.S. DOT Computational Transportation Project ( and the Autonomic Research Laboratory are operating under the Center's organizational structure.  The Center's Director, Naphtali Rishe, is the inaugural Outstanding University Professor of FIU.  The FAU Site Director is Borko Furht. Dubna International University, Russia, joined the Center in August 2010 under the Site Directorship of Academician Eugenia Cheremisina. The Center's Chair of the Industrial Advisory Board is Oded Cohn, Director of the IBM Haifa Research Center and IBM Corporate Vice President for Technical Talent.

The work at I/UCRC-CAKE has provided significant technological advances and contributions to the body of knowledge in multiple domains. The Center published 53 articles in peer-reviewed journals and 64 articles in conference proceedings ( Eleven patent applications were filed and 2 patents awarded.

An example of the cutting edge technological solutions researched and developed at I/UCRC-CAKE  is the TerraFly project at TerraFly is a technology for visualization and querying of geospatial data that provides users with the experience of virtual "flight" over maps comprised of aerial and satellite imagery overlaid with geo-referenced data. Capabilities include user-friendly geospatial querying, data drill-down, interfaces with real-time data suppliers, demographic analysis, annotation, route dissemination via autopilots, customizable applications, production of aerial atlases, and an application programming interface (API) that allows rapid deployment of interactive Web applications to produce systems for disaster mitigation, ecology, real estate, tourism, and municipalities.
