Research Focus & Anticipated Benefits

The Center for Advanced Forestry Systems, an NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC), researches technological solutions to the problem of maximizing wood production on limited amounts of forested land.  The center pairs forestry research programs at nine universities with industry partners to solve complex, industry-wide problems.

The center's collaborative research mission is to optimize genetic and cultural systems to produce high-quality raw forest materials for new and existing products.  The research projects address problems on multiple scales, including molecular, cellular, individual-tree, stand, and ecosystem levels. This effort relies on the participation of scientists with expertise in biological sciences (biotechnology, genomics, ecology, physiology, and soils) and management and processing (silviculture, bioinformatics, modeling, remote sensing, and spatial analysis).

Education & Outreach

An I/UCRC not only contributes to the nation's research infrastructure base; it also enhances the intellectual capacity of the engineering and science workforce through the integration of research and education.  The Center for Advanced Forestry Systems leverages NSF funding with industry resources to support graduate students conducting industrially relevant and interdisciplinary research.
