Abstract at Time of Award

Brigham Young University (BYU) proposes to join the existing Center for e-Design that is currently comprised of Virginia Tech (lead), the University of Central Florida, the University of Massachusetts, and Carnegie Mellon University. BYU will complement the research umbrella by investigating, modifying, and prototyping, at kernel levels, new architectures for networked multi-user computer-aided applications (v-CAx). The new institution will add strategically to Center goals, because of its strong history in applications of modern CAx software. Faculty from various disciplines at BYU will be involved because of the scope of problems that must be addressed in a multi-user, architectural CAx environment. The new university brings cultural diversity to the research that will be demanded by research prototypes. BYU will extend and integrate CAx applications through API libraries, computer OS architectures, network security, and business team conflict resolution. BYU has strong relationships with several international institutions that have expertise in gaming technologies. BYU's strong dependence on both undergraduate and graduate students for development and testing, will provide students a rich educational experience. The university also plans to involve K-12 and post K-12 levels in the Center.

Modern computer operating systems (OS) and computer aided applications, at their core kernel level architectures, are designed for single users. This single core deficiency limits the vision of global collaborative product engineering because product models must be evolved by one user at a time. Today, product design requires intense collaboration among many participants, including participants and suppliers distributed around the world. The BYU site of the NSF I/UCRC Center for e-Design, through prototypes, patents, patent disclosures, and demonstrations, has converted single user design applications (like CAD, CAE, and CAM) to multi-user. The tests have demonstrated improved design efficiencies, reduced design errors, and potential for design collaboration among virtual (distributed) design teams.

The multi-user method enables many clients to simultaneously collaborate and edit a single model, much like the gaming community can collect distributed teams to play together on an internet game. Of course, when designing products, the simulteneous application environment is very complex.

One of the more interesting extensions of this collaborative approach has been to design products using different applications of the same type. This "interoperable" approach allows clients to use the design application of their choice to work on the same model in a multi-user environment. Heretofore, the approach, when engaging distributed suppliers in the design process, has been to translate the model into the native applications used by the suppliers. This method is fraught with errors, very coslty, and leads model incompleteness. Although  this research is in its infrancy,  the BYU Site has demonstrated feasibility of this approach and is quite optimistic about the potential of interoperable product development.

Over the last year, 9 respected and large U.S. industries and government organizations assisted the BYU site in maturing and testing new collaborative technologies.Approximately $500,000 was spent in R&D, 7 patent disclosures were submitted for patenting, and a spin-off company was licensed to commecialize the multi-user environment. 8 bachelor students and 4 masters students, all Site researchers, graduated to assume prominent positions in companies interested in this new paradigm. One PhD student was hired by a site members. As in previous years about 15 - 20 undergraduate students annually pursue research in the lab, while about 10 graduate students participate, including 5 PhD students. Because the  supporting members are U.S. based, the reseachers must all be U.S. citizens. 10 faculty members from 5 departments and programs participate  at The BYU Site.
