Mastery of mathematics is a critical achievement for students wishing to participate in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) enterprise. Turtle Mountain Community College has implemented the HAWKES Learning System, a computer-based learning tool that assists students learning math. Within the first year of implementation, the success rates in basic math climbed 22 percent.

The college has now institutionalized the use of this learning system, making programs available at all levels of instruction. The rate of college algebra II completion has risen from 35 percent to 69 percent. These gains express the striking impact on students' educational options.  Participants whose math skills are improved by this program will be better prepared for 21st century jobs.
