REU Site: Simulation and Visualization of Biological Systems at Multiple Scales (University of Pittsburgh)
Inspired by NSF's leadership in promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education in the "new biology," University of Pittsburgh investigators have designed and implemented an integrative training program in computational biology.
TECBio REU @ Pitt is an immersive 10-week summer research experience for undergraduates program housed in the Department of Computational and Systems Biology at Pitt's School of Medicine. TECBio reaches out to students from a wide range of academic disciplines, from ethnic and racial backgrounds underrepresented in the sciences, and from schools with limited research opportunities. These students integrate into the department's "tiered mentoring" framework, which gives them access to a team of mentors and provides them with the opportunity to mentor younger scientists.
The TECBio experience includes working on cutting-edge computational research in bioimage analysis, genomics, structural biology and systems biology, as well as participating in other academic and professional development enrichment activities such as introductory classes in computational biology, hands-on computer laboratory sessions, research and career seminars, responsible conduct of research training, and numerous writing and presentation opportunities. Students also enjoy the various social and cultural activities available in Pittsburgh.
As emphasized in Vision and Change, a report by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and NSF, institutions must encourage and prepare students to pursue careers in STEM. TECBio aims to address this need by providing students from diverse backgrounds with an immersive graduate-level research and training experience in the emerging field of computational biology. After participating in the program, TECBio students are better prepared to successfully pursue graduate careers and be future leaders in STEM.
