Research Focus & Anticipated Benefits

 The Center for Advanced Knowledge Enablement, an NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC),  addresses industry problems in data modeling, data collection, data mining, petascale archives, network topology studies, and novel search techniques. 

 The explosive growth in the number and resolution of sensors and scientific instruments, of enterprise and scientific databases, and of Internet traffic and activity has engendered unprecedented volumes of data. The frameworks, metadata structures, algorithms, data sets, search and data mining solutions needed to manage the volumes of data in use today are largely ad-hoc.  This I/UCRC's research addresses industry-relevant research problems in data modeling, data collection, data mining, petascale archives, network topology studies, and novel search techniques. The kinds of research problems the Center is equipped to carry out include performance studies, and the application of novel graph algorithms, routines, and software tools to large-scale data sets.  It can tailor software libraries or middleware to the needs of an industrial partner. It can carry out experimental studies on novel storage or computational architectures, applying benchmarks. It can make available the theoretical underpinnings of a problem of interest to multiple industry members, and can demonstrate practical applications of the theory.

 The Center studies the representation, management, storage, analysis, search and social aspects of large and complex data. The research is be applicable to biomedical, defense, homeland security, environmental concerns, real estate, health records management, finance, and technology service companies. The faculty carry out research in performance studies, benchmark evaluations, and the application of novel algorithms, routines, data models, network analyses and software tools to large-scale data sets.

Education & Outreach

An I/UCRC not only contributes to the nation's research infrastructure base; it also enhances the intellectual capacity of the engineering and science workforce through the integration of research and education. The program leverages NSF funding with industry resources to support graduate students performing industrially relevant and interdisciplinary research.
