Large High Performance (LHP) Outdoor Shake Table  (University of California-San Diego)

Research Focus & Anticipated Benefits

The Large High-Performance (LHP) Outdoor Shake Table at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), acting in combination with equipment and facilities separately funded by the California Department of Transportation, is a one-of-a-kind seismic testing facility. The facility is a part of the National Science Foundation-funded George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES).

This unique facility will enable next-generation seismic experiments to be conducted on very large systems such as full-scale buildings, bridge supports, electrical sub-stations, nuclear containment casks, and seismic-isolation systems. Coupled with nearby facilities, the LHP Outdoor Shake Table will consolidate the leadership of the NEES collaboratory as the predominant earthquake testing consortium in the world.

Although this table is not the largest of its kind in terms of size in the world, it is the world's first outdoor shake table, and its velocity, frequency range, and stroke capabilities make it the largest table outside of Japan. The facility will add a significant new dimension and capabilities to existing U.S. testing facilities with no overhead space and lifting constraints.

Education & Outreach

The LHP Outdoor Shake Table is integrated into UCSD’s research program involving undergraduate and graduate students, the Department of Structural Engineering curriculum, and K-12 and general public outreach. UCSD also provides training opportunities for outside faculty, students, and practitioners through web-based tutorials and on-site training. Visitors to the facility's website can even keep tabs on what’s happening at the site via two live camera feeds.
