Research Focus & Anticipated Benefits

Materials Research Science & Engineering Center on Nanostructured Interfaces is a Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at the University of Wisconsin, Madison funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). MRSECs support interdisciplinary materials research and education of the highest quality while addressing fundamental problems in science and engineering that are important to society.

UW MRSEC carries out research in the formation, characterization, and exploitation of materials at the nanoscale - the scale of individual atoms. It aims to fundamentally understand topics of substantial technological importance, and to communicate this understanding to the public.

The interdisciplinary research groups and seed projects at UW MRSEC are built on the existing strong base of expertise at the University of Wisonsin, Madison and collaborating industries and national laboratories. The research extends the work of the Center to investigations at the crossroads of advanced inorganic materials, polymers, and biological systems, areas of rapidly increasing technological significance. A common feature of all UW MRSEC research is the investigation of heterogeneous interfacial phenomena from the near-atomic through macroscopic scales.

Education & Outreach

UW MRSEC's Interdisciplinary Education Group uses examples of nanotechnology and advanced materials to explore science and engineering concepts at the college level, and brings the "wow" and the potential of nanotechnology and advanced materials to the public. The Center works to enhance public appreciation of science and engineering through a central theme of "Exploring the Nanoworld," using web dissemination to novice learners, presentations in general public venues, and contributions to popular publications and media. UW MRSEC also hosts and Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program that allows upper level undergraduates to spend a summer doing materials science research at UW MRSEC while earning a stipend.
