R/V Clifford A. Barnes Ship Operations 2005-2009  (University of Washington)

Research Focus & Anticipated Benefits

The Research Vessel Clifford A. Barnes is owned by the National Science Foundation and operated by the University of Washington as a part of the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) fleet. UNOLS brings academic institutions and national laboratories involved in oceanographic research to coordinate the schedules of oceanographic ships and research facilities.

The Clifford Barnes is used primarily in the inland waters of the Puget Sound region and lower British Columbia. This small vessel can accommodate six scientists and a two-person crew.

Education & Outreach

Provision of this sea-going research and educational facility enables marine scientists from the University of Washington and other institutions nationwide to study natural phenomena and to instruct future scientists and stewards of our marine ecosystems. Essential to the Clifford Barnes mission is the provision of educational opportunities to students of the marine sciences and through educational outreach programs. The university periodically holds a two-day open house and outreach event to provide a learning experience for students in grades 3-12, including tours through the ship facilities and hands-on demonstrations of marine science research guided by faculty, students and the ship's crew members.
